Quartz - Citrine

Citrine is a yellow variety of quartz which can be artificially made by cooking purple or black quartz. These cooked quartzes are hard to distinguish from the natural Citrine quartz and are sometimes passed off as the much more rare and expensive yellow-orange Topaz. Naturally occurring Citrine seems to have been originally amethyst that has been cooked by nearby hot melted rocks. Rainbow Stone

The rainbow stone is popular because of its iridescent colours, which move as you rotate the elongate fibrous metally mass. It is not really a natural mineral at all. The crystals form one bi-products of an industrial refining process. If they ever do tarnish all it takes is a gentle hit to clean off the outside surface and new rainbows appear on the metallic crystals.
